BASF presents EPS ChemCycling pilot project with partner Storopack

Together with Storopack, BASF has developed several prototypes made of Styropor® Ccycled. The properties of the ChemCycling products are indistinguishable from conventionally manufactured Styropor® products.

Kick-off press conference at the world's most important plastics fair: K 2019

In front of about 70 journalists from all over the world experts presented a part of our wide range of plastics innovations at the press conference. Among them was the latest innovation in the ChemCycling project, which was presented together with partner Storopack. The specialist in protective packaging and technical molded parts has developed several prototypes made of Styropor® P Ccycled in collaboation with BASF. These include a fishbox and a protective packing for the temperature-controlled transportation of medical applications. At the kick-off, Hermann Reichenecker, Chairman of the Management Board and President of the Packaging Unit at Storopack, among others, stated that "BASF's initiative to drive chemical recycling is an important step and we are proud to be part of the project."

The ChemCycling project also took center stage at the BASF booth. Plastics continue to be innovative, indispensable valuable materials - this was impressively demonstrated by 3300 exhibitors from 63 nations, including BASF. As discussed in Live Talks, among others, the BASF ChemCycling project can be a solution to close the recycling loop: In the chemical recycling project, pyrolysis oil is obtained from mixed plastic waste using thermochemical processes. "Chemical recycling can thus make a further contribution to closing the material cycle in addition to mechanical recycling," said Klaus Ries, Vice President Global Business Management Styrenic Foams at BASF.
